Great fir of London

Storyboard Text

  • On September 2nd 1666, a fire had broken out on pudding lane. The fire had come from Thomas Farriner, a baker, he had left his oven on for too long causing it to overheat and creat a fire. Farriner, his wife and daughter managed to escape through an upstairs window, however , their maid was to frightened to jump and was left to burn in the fire. She was then first to die from the fire.
  • Meanwhile, on Seething Lane was Samuel Pepy, who had been woken up around 3 am by his maid telling him that a fire had started. Pepy looked out his window and said not to worry it was faraway from his house. around 7 o’clock Pepy’s maid woke him up again. Telling him that 300 houses had been burned and that the fire was spreading.
  • People were terrified. They started to move their belongings to other houses and when the fire fire got closer they’d move them again. Others would load their things on carts or horses. Some people would put them on boats on the River Thames. The poor would try to gather as much as they could and would flee.
  • The fire had lasted just under five days, five-sixths of London had been destroyed and 100,000 people were left homeless and only six deaths had been recorded.
  • However, the fire of London did have some good impact on the city. Due to the fire many rats were killed, which was good as it had ended the plague. The fire also helped London to develop.
  • An architect called Christopher’s Wren produced new plans for the city, but people didn’t want to remake London entirely, they wanted new homes to be built were their old ones were. They didn’t want to risk loosing their land. The government, however, agreed to make a few changes. Houses were now made out of brick and not wood, there were now height restrictions on buildings and many new churches were made (Some still around today).
