  • In the Middle Ages, one of the most important roles was to keep law and order. It was important to make sure that everyone obeyed the laws, but there were no policemen.

  • When a criminal was taught, they would usually be taken to the local lord's manor house. The lord would then decide on a punishment.
  • Stocks were used to hold the legs of miscreants, it was usually vagabonds or drunkards - while people threw rotten vegetables at them.
  • Pillory was simple the guilty had to stand up in the pillory and sometimes the prisoners ears were nailed to the wooden board.
