- They were trying to get James 1 to grant them a charter for a colony in North America. The Virginia colony wanted to establish settlements in north america so their settlers would find gold and establish trade in fish and furs. James 1 granted the charter and 144 settlers in three ships built a new colony. They named the river they sailed up in James, and the new settlement jamestown to honor their king. They failed to find gold or riches and faced a hardship the amost caused jamestown to fail, this includes disease and hunger.

They ended up deciding to barry their captain outside of the wall to show that they arent afriad of them. Most of the people died from salt water poisoning becasue of drining the water from the river.
