Before the 1870s there was great unsettled territory. These plains were where The traditional native people lived. The homestead act took place convincing people to travel. The people were promised free land for five years. Amy and Alan were some of those who took the word and traveled to settle in the new lands.
Amy and Alan realized the easiest way to reach these lands in the West was to use the transcontinental railroad. This was way easier than traveling by foot. The railroads were not only used for settlers but also their goods and cattle. This eventually encouraged western migration furthur.
The Native Americans already in their lands were angered the settlers were trying to take over in their lands. This introduced cowboys who then fought wars with the natives. This series of skirmishes between them lasted around 25 years.
Once Amy and Alan made it to the west they found Open range land. There were no natives there and the land was not already owned. They settled there and made sod houses. For this they had to collect grass and soil to make bricks for a sturdy house.
Due to the conditions during these times, the couple had to work extra hard to get the life they wanted. Resources lacked so materials were low. There was no fuel, temperatures were extremes and there was no fuel. There was also no rain so crops were hard to grow. New inventions like the steel plow helped with farming and other inventions.
Later on for the couple they were in a good and settled place. They had had farm animals kept in by their barbed wires. This helped keep them in place on the farm. They also had windmills that helped raise water to the wells around. Life like this has continued and the couple lived happy and thriving in their environment.
