After he defeated the French in 1804, Dessalines declared St. Domingue independent and renamed it Haiti, its original name.
It does not end there. In 1825, a French emissary shows up w/ an army and demands for reparations or they will declare war.
France wanted reparations for the land and slaves they lost.

3. Haiti was only a youthful country before France came in and stripped them of their money that could be put towards development to help their land. In todays money, they payed $21 billion.
2. They had to take out loans from the French banks. Even though the reparations have been paid off, they still are in large debt due to the loans
1. Haiti could not afford to go to war, so they decided to make the payments, which was a struggle.
Since France is responsible for leaving Haiti in such poor conditions, France should pay reparationsthrough better education, roads, housing, jobs, and developments.
Because Haiti is one of the worlds poorest countries due to the debt from France, talk about reparations from France to Haiti is often talked about
