  • One major theme of "Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" is fear and suspicion are destructive. For example, Steve and Charlie who were best friends were accusing each other of being the monster. This supports the theme because of their fear and suspicion, they blamed each other and their friendship was ruined. Another example was when Charlie saw a dark monster approaching him so he shot it immediately without thinking. It supports the theme because since Charlie was scared and didn't know who the mystery person was, he thought it was an alien and shot it right away only to find out that it was Pete Van Horn. The last example was in the end when the residents didn't know who the alien was so they all turned on each other and resorted to violence. This supports the theme because instead of trying to figure out who the alien was, everyone was blaming each other because they were all suspicious in their own ways causing chaos/violence. In conclusion, the theme of the story "Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" is fear and suspicion are destructive because the fear and suspicion of people are making them act different and more violently.
