What should I bring? Nothing fits in my pocket... SEEDS!
Symbol- Seeds
One symbol the author uses to add a deeper meaning to the story Chain is the ghosts. The ghosts symbolize Isabel; and Ruth's parents (who are dead), who bring protection and comfort to them. When Isabel and Ruth are sold unfairly, as they were free, Isabel and Ruth are sent away to the Locktons. Unfortunately for them, ghosts can't cross over the ocean. So when Isabel and Ruth are shipped away, they no longer have that protection and comfort from their parents. Isabel expresses her emotions when she thinks, “Momma said that ghosts couldn’t move over water. That’s why kidnapped Africans got trapped in the Americas”(25). This quote proves all the above concepts.
Another symbol used in chains is bees. According to chains, the bees represent Isabel's desire for freedom as well as her sorrow and misery. To prove this, in the text, it says, "Melancholy held me hostage, and the bees built a hive of sadness in my soul. Dark honey filled up inside me, drowning my thoughts and making it hard to move my eyes"(157). This shows how the bees cause grief.
An additional symbol in chains is seeds. The seeds represent a new start to life, something Isabel's mother didn't get the chance to do, as well as a piece of her previous home, which had many memories. To prove this, in the text, it says, " ...searching for a tiny piece of home I could hide in my pocket. What to take? Seeds"(13). The quote proves how the seeds represent something that brings comfort and helps Isabel settle into her new home/dungeon.
