- HE IS NORMAN GORTSBY

- On the bench, sat an elderly gentlemen by the side of Norman Gortsby. Norman Gortsby started judging that gentlemen
- His clothes are so shabby. One can not imagine him being rich. Had he been in an orchestra, no one would have danced to his tune. In fact, if he were to cry, no one would feel sorry for him.
- As he rose to go, Norman Gortsby thought the old gentlemen was returning to his bleak and humble house where he struggled to pay his rent.
- The old mans place on the bench was immediately taken by a young man, fairly well dressed but hardly cheerful.
- You don't seem in a very good temper
- You would not be in a very good temper if you were in a fix like me. "I have done the silliest thing I have ever done in my life.
- Yes?
- "Came up this afternoon, meaning to stay at the Patagonian Hotel in Berkshire Square.," continued the young man; "when I got there I found it had been pulled down some weeks ago, and a cinema theatre came up on the site. The taxi driver told me of another hotel some way off, and I went there. I just sent a letter to my family, giving them the address, and then I went out to buy some soap. I had forgotten to pack any, and I hate using hotel soap. Then I strolled out a bit, had a drink at a bar, and looked at the shops and, when I came to turn my steps back to the hotel, I suddenly realized that I did not remember its name or even what street it was in. That's a terrible thing to happen to a fellow who has no friends or connections in London. Of course, I can wire to my family for the address but they won't get my my letter by tomorrow; meantime I am without any money. I came to London with about a shilling on me, which went in buying the soap and getting the drink , and here I am wandering about with two pence in my pocket and nowhere to go for the night."
- Not at all impossible. I remember doing exactly the same thing once in a foreign capital, and on that occasion there were two of us. which made it more interesting. Luckily, we remembered the hotel was in a sort of canal, and when we struck the canal, we were able to find our way back to the hotel.
- I suppose you think I have been spinning an impossible yarn?
