Good morning, teacher Jane. Can I ask for your suggestion about my language learning materials development?
Good morning, Teacher Alexa. Sure, what is it?
I want to make my materials to embrace the idea of inclusivity so it would benefit the entire group of students.
It could be a little tricky, but make sure that the learning materials you use favors all types of students. It is important that you do not bore the students with advanced knowledge and skills nor frustrate those with lesser capability to perform.
That is so good to hear that you consider the diversity of your students, and hear about your initiative to create an inclusive classroom environment for all of the through your materials.
But there could be cases when a material could only cater a certain type of students. I don't want other students to be left behind when I use such materials.
Evaluate your materials to measure its value (or potential value). You cannot give the students learning materials when you know nothing of its potential impact to their learning.
That's the time when you have to adapt these materials, teacher Alexa.
Also, remember these techniques in adapting materials: Adding, Deleting, Modifying, SimplifyingReordering
Adapting materials? Is it necessary?
McDonough, Jo, and ChristopherShaw. Materials and Methods in ELT. John Wiley & Sons, 2012.
Yes. Adapting materials is important to maximize the appropriacy ofteaching materials in context, by changing some of the internal characteristics of a coursebook/material to suit our particular circumstances better.
We should (1) personalize (increase relevance of content in relation to learners’ interests, their academic, educational or professional needs), (2) Individualize (address the diverse learning styles of each learners), (3) localize (takes into account the fact that what may work well in one student community may not do so in another, hence localizing the materials and making it more familiar and relatable to the learners) our materials to make it most appropriate for our target learners' needs.
Oh, this means a teacher can be creative in designing the most appropriate materials for the learners.
Thank you so much, Teacher Jane! I sure will incorporate everything you told me in my materials development.
It's always a pleasure helping teachers with such intention for her learners. Have a great day ahead, Teacher Alexa!
Exactly! And we should know since we get to be with them everyday and observe them. We should know what will most likely work for them and what won't.
