Ok Class today I will go over the reading and vocabulary. The combined genetic information of all the members of a particular population is described as a gene pool. The number of times an allele occurs in a gene pool compared with the number of times other alleles occur is the relative frequency of that allele. A physical characteristic controlled by a single gene that has two alleles is a single gene trait. A polygenic trait is a trait controlled by two or more genes, because poly means many.
When individuals around the center of the curve have higher fitness it is called stabilizing selection.
When individuals at one end of the curve have higher fitness than other individuals it is called directional selection.
The concept that the smaller the population the farther results may be from probability is called genetic drift.
When individuals at the extreme ends of the curve have higher fitness it is called disruptive, because being average is a disadvantage.
The situation in which allele frequencies change as a result of the migration of a small subgroup of a population is called the founder effect. The principle that allele frequencies in a population will remain constant unless one or more factors cause those frequencies to change is the Hardy Weinberg Principle. The situation in which allele frequencies remain constant is called genetic equilibrium. The formation of a new species is referred to with the term speciation, you should remember that in particular. When members of a population cannot interbreed and produce fertile offspring they are reproductively isolated.
When two populations are capable of interbreeding but have differences in courtship rituals or other types of behavior they are behaviorally isolated. If two populations are separated by geographic barriers they are geographically isolated. The last type of isolation is temporal, and it occurs when two or more species reproduce at different times.
You've done a wonderful job class!
