Another part of the cell you'll need to know are ribosomes. They are the smallest organelle we'll be learning about. Ribosomes are made of RNA and protein, they are where proteins are assembled.
Can you explain how ribosomes are connected to the Endoplasmic Reticulum?
Very good.
The rough ER modifies proteins and is covered in ribosomes while the smooth ER makes lipids and steroids and doesn't have any ribosomes covering it.
Lysosomes are small organelles filled with enzymes which break down food into chemicals that the cell can use for energy, they also recycle parts of the cell which don't work anymore.
Carbohydrates and lipids are attached to proteins in the Golgi Apparatus. The Golgi Apparatus is made up of a stack of membranes.
Vacuoles are found in both plant cells and animal cells. In both they are used to store salts, proteins, and carbohydrates, they are sac-like structures, however, in plant cells they are much bigger and there is only one vacuole per cell whereas in animal cells there may be multiple.
Are chloroplasts found in animal cells?
Good question, chloroplasts convert light energy into energy rich chemical energy through photosynthesis, as such they are only found in plant cells. From there the chemical energy goes to the mitochondria which is found in all Eukaryotic cells and uses the chemical energy from food or photosynthesis and converts it into ATP.
