  • Wait, so there's a difference between Calorie with a capital c and calorie with a lower case c?
  • Yes, calorie with a lower case c is the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of 1g of water by 1 degree Celsius.
  • I'm happy to see that you guys are helping each other. Today we'll be talking about Glycolysis, Glycolysis is the breakdown of glucose by enzymes releasing energy and pyruvic acid. Glycolysis is the first step of cellular respiration which is the process that releases energy by breaking down food molecules in the presence of oxygen.
  • NAD+ is an electron carrier that accepts a pair of high-energy electrons to become NADH. Now fermentation is the process of releasing energy from food molecules in the absence of oxygen. Now can one of you tell me the difference between anaerobic and aerobic.
  • Anaerobic is something that requires oxygen and aerobic is something that doesn't require oxygen.
  • Isn't the other way around?
  • It is actually the other way around Jessica, just make sure not to mess that up on the quiz. Now could you tell me about the Krebs Cycle and the Electron Transport Chain. I'll give you a hint, they both take place in the Mitochondria, unlike glycolysis.
  • The Krebs Cycle is the second stage of cellular respiration where Pyruvic Acid is broken down into CO2 in a series of energy extracting reactions.
  • The Electron Transport Chain is the use of high energy electrons from the Krebs Cycle and Glycolysis to convert ADP into ATP.
