After the failure of the Meech lake & Charlotte Town accord, what will our future be!?
We aren't happy!
I promise there will be a Referendum!
Premier Jacques Parizeau
The question was finally posed to all of Quebec.
Do you agree that Quebec should become sovereign, after making an offer to Canada for a new economic & political partnership within the scope of the bill & agreement signed June 12, 1995?
Oct 30, 1995
Lucien Bouchard took over the 'yes' side from Parizeau during the final 3 weeks of the Referendum.
The 'no' side took the lead in the beginning, but the 'yes' side quickly gained momentum...
YES!
I'm taking over!
Vote Yes for the referendum!!
Lucien Bouchard
The votes were counted... and the 'no' side achieved victory by just 1.16%
49.42%
50.58%
There was no identification of eligible voters
You counted the votes wrong!!
There was still considerable controversy and unrest among the people
We want a free Quebec!!!
Give us a re-vote!
Bouchard assumed leadership of Parti-Quebecois & became Premier.
I will conduct another referendum on seperation in 1997!
Quebec continued to try and push for another referendum, and separatism, but it kept getting pushed from the political agenda. PQ continued to bring it up in future years, but nothing more was done.
Jean Chrétian & the Federal goverment
- Quebec Sovereignty= Economic & Legal problems!!!- 1998 Clarity Act (future referendums would have to be on a "clear question" & results are up to the Federal government!). - 1998 Supreme Court: Quebec cannot separate.
