Throughout the story of MAUS, the Nazi party is attempting and slowly gaining power over the Jews and other nearby groups of people as they conquer land and countries. Using any means necessary, the Nazis claim lives through the use of toxic gasses, vigorous manual labor, and shootings.
In modern life, images can be used to beat down or demean a person because of their choices or actions. With the recent Amber Heard court case, images have been used to mock her choices in the case and her false or weak accusations throughout.
The significance of the animals chosen in the novel are that of a time worn cliché of cat chase mouse. Essentially the Nazis being cats ,chasing the mouse, but the cats getting chased by the Americans, which are dogs, adding further to the cliché. The poles as pigs just fits as farm animals maybe because they were gluttons or more likely that they were getting herded just as the mice were.
The choice to draw characters as animals instead of a human figure was mostly in part to the significance and symbolism as such. The animals make the suffering and pain a little lighter compared to drawing human characters that would make the story seem unnecessary and too relatable for the authors desired message.
Comics have been a staple of growth and youth and still are today with the superheroes and cartoon themed interactions. Though now they have been changed to be enjoyable by adults as well with the occasional hidden joke or topic that the child does not understand. With the art style remaining consistent in that the characters resemble human features but are much simpler than a true human.
