- Percy Spencer was born in Howland, Maine, United States. He never graduated from elementary school. He joined the navy at age 18 to learn wireless telegraphy. Spencer married and had three sons, James, John, and George. He died in Newton, Massachusetts on September 9, 1970.
- Spencer was conducting experiments with the magnetron, a device that produces radio signals.

- Spencer saw that the chocolate bar in his pants pocket was melted and guessed it was because of the electromagnetic waves.

- Spencer guessed that those waves were what melted the candy in her pocket, so she decided to test her hypothesis with a raw egg and some corn kernels. He exposed them to the magnetron beams and voilà: the egg exploded in his face and the kernels turned into popcorn.

- Some time later, the company for which Spencer worked, Raytheon, patented the use of the magnetron for cooking and thus the first microwave was born, called "Radarange".
- Today the microwave serves us to heat and defrost food in minutes or even seconds, which makes people's lives more practical.
