You will be my governer in Virginia. You will have authority over the whole colony, even their elected assembly.
The Stamp Act
We have to pay off our debt from the war, and the colonists aren't paying us taxes...
The tax on paper is madness! We will not have taxation without representation!
In 1619, the first African American slaves came to Virginia. They had been forcefully taken from their homes and brought by boat. The journey took weeks, and they were kept in stinky, crowded areas with barely enough room to sit down. Many died before they reached the colonies.
The King elected his own governers for most of the colonies. These governors lived in the colonies and acted on behalf of the king. They could overrule the assemblies elected by the colonists at any point.
In 1765, The King issued "The Stamp Act", saying that all colonists had to pay a tax on any piece of paper they purchased, whether it was a deck of cards, a map, or a blank paper. The colonists were outraged because they had no voice in the government that was taxing them.
