Ahmet, his wife, son, and daughter were forced to flee Syria because of a war that was taking place. they thought this was the best idea to do but didnt know it was going to be a struggle
Ahmet has made the decision to not file for asylum. He states that he “will think about my options, but [he is] certainly not going at sea again. [He] left for the future of [his] kids; [he] not going to die with them in the sea. Life is not over.”
$32,000
Ahmet, his family, and 339 other people all boarded a flimsy fishing boat driven by smugglers in hopes for a better life. They were all promised that they would be traveling to somewhere much safer than Syria.
Panic and anxiety began to settle in for Ahmet, and his family as well as the 339 other passengers on the boat as they realised that they had been abandoned. The smugglers had left them stranded in the ocean. Luckily they were rescued off the coast of Cyprus.
You have been saved!!
After being rescued, Ahmet, his family and 339 other refugees are staying in a refugee camp near Nicosia. Though they are safe now, they know this is only temporary. They are afraid of what will happen in the future.
Some of the refugees have begun to file for asylum. Asylum is the protection granted by the nation to someone who has left their country as a political refugee. The main downside to this is that you are not guaranteed to remain with your family, which is why Ahmet has yet to do so.
