  • Hey! Im Billie Joe! I am always on the fields helping dad out!
  • Meet the Main Character: Billie Jo
  • Windy, Painful, Fast
  • Out of the Dust tells us the story about Billie Joe, a girl living in Oklahoma during the Great Depression, whose mother gets seriously injured in an accident and dies giving birth to a stillborn child. Billie Joe then has to continue to move on with her life with people telling her her mothers death was all her fault and her missing her mother so much.
  • Death Occurs
  • "Billie. Im coming as quick as I can! Im getting the doctor to! Just breathe!"
  • "Nooooo!! Mom wake up!!! MOMMMM!! This can't be happening!" Dad, come here!"
  • This is the main character in the book. She explains herself in the book by saying, "a long legged girl with a wide mouth and check bones like bicycle handles. He got a redheaded, heckle-face, narrow-hipped girl with a fondness for apples, and a hunger for playing fierce piano."
  • The End
  • YAYYY! That sounds like a great idea!
  • Hi dad! Since I can start to use my hand again I'm thinking about playing the piano again.
  • A huge red dust storm had happened. Dust storms happened a lot. Over night, Billie watched the dust come. Tearing up all the fields with the wheat and all of Billie's Dads hard work. Rain also came and took all the soil away. Only a small about of her moms apples has fallen. This had took away lots of money that Billie's family were going make and all the hard work which caused them to be upset.
  • The Lesson
  • One day when in the kitchen cooking breakfast mom thought the pail that her husband put by the stove was filled with water so she lifted it up and poured it for coffee. Instead of making coffee she had caused a huge fire. The pail had kerosene in it. She become a column of fire. Billie tried to help her and save the baby in her moms stomach. It was no good and her mom died a couple days later while trying to give birth.
  • Towards the end of the book Billie Jo's dad and Louise are on the verge of getting married. Louise is the girl that stayed with Billie's dad when Billie was on the run. Billie Jo has gotten the strength to use her hands since the burn . She wants to go back into playing the piano. She finally is starting to get herself back together and knows her mom will be with her forever.
  • In this novel Billie learns that the hard times aren't only about money, or droughts hard times are about losing spirit, and hope. She also eventually learns to not give up and keep pushing through life during the hard times.
