Othello, feeling utterly betrayed by Desdemona, kills her. Iago's wife, Emilia, realizes that Iago has been manipulating everyone and opposes him, only to be stabbed and killed by him. The tragic loss of both Desdemona and Emilia are for nothing because Desdemona was never unfaithful, and Iago has only lied and schemed for his own benefit.

"Then must you speak / Of one that loved not wisely, but too well; / Of one not easily jealous, but being wrought, / Perplex’d in the extreme" (5.2.193).
Othello reflects, realizing his misunderstandings and coming to terms with the consequences of his enraged actions. Through this self-awareness, the audience experiences a moment of catharsis. The overwhelming emotions that have been built upon throughout the climax intensifies.
