Purakau Mataoho

- Tamaki Makaurau is the Maori name for Auckland. The people living in this land were Patupaiarehe, fairy people. There were two tribes living on this land, One iwi lived in the waitakere forest on the west, and the other iwi in the Hunua Forest on the south.
- On moonless nights younger members of the two iwi would play a game. At night they would sneak into the other tribe and then bring something back to prove that they were there. One night a boy named Hui returned with nothing, the other kids teased him.

- One moonless night Hui did not come back after the game. All his friends got worried and blamed themselves for not taking better care of their friend. When the Chief found his son missing he summoned a great war party. Then in the distance to figures come running, It was Hui and a beautiful young girl called Wairere, the daughter of Hunua.
- The Hunua tribe got really angry and sent a giant war party heading towards the other tribe. But Waitakere saw them coming. The High Priest reached down into the Earth the took some of its magical powers to cast a deadly spell. The entire war party from Hunua collapsed. There was silence.
- Mataaho, the Guardian of the Earth's secrets was furious at the Tohunga for taking the magic without permission and wakened his brother Ruaumoko, the God of Earthquakes, and created a gaping chasm in the tribes land. Everybody ran for their lives but couldn't out-run the combined anger of the two gods, melting the people before they could do anything.
- Many years later two Patupairehe sat on a hill overlooking the Tamaki volcanic field. In sad disbelief Wairere said It wasn't a dream . No , answered Hui, And we are the only ones left.It is said that the fertile soil of the land attracted people to this region for centuries. It is for this reason Auckland is called Tamaki Makaurau.
