The South's hope for victory was if President Lincoln were to lose the election of 1864. The Northern Democrats nominated General George McClellan to run against Lincoln because McClellan urged an immediate end to the conflict. The victories changed the Northern opinion about Lincoln and his idea of ending the war. Lincoln got reelected in November.
