  • The monsters are due on Maple Street theme: Fear a suspicion are dire
  • In "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" by Rod Serling, one of the main themes is Fear and suspicion are destructive. Charlie states "He Was Always an oddball" on page nine (pdf form).Charlie shows his increasing suspicion of his neighbor Les Goodman for something that wasnt his fault. Its clear neighbors try to find reasoning for the strange phenomenons going on within the neighborhood, therefore start blaming each. “It must of been him” Says the crowd of people as they start to form around charlie. This shows us that because the neighbors are suspicious of charlie for something they cannot prove..“They pick the most dangerous enemy they can find...and it's themselves. And all we need do is sit back...and watch. There are weapons only to be found in the minds of men”. States figure one and two these characters arent feeling any fear or suspicion but they are seeing it. In conclusion Fear and suspicion are destructive. Things such as rumors, false accusations and framing are detremental to ones social image. Social image is important because it determines the acceptance you hold in society. Destroying that piece of someones life can isolate them from family and friends.
