  • Gina's Story:A Reflectionby Christopher Tran
  • Gina's story from both the reading and the presentation was impactful from the emotions displayed by Gina and her family. It was also bittersweet and encouraging. It was bittersweet because of the professionals who have most likely seen similar situations, and how they perceived the situation to be dire. It was encouraging because Gina would be one of the success stories that led to a prosperous life. The guardians, family members, specialist, professionals, and educators around Gina all had a role in her life. From those experiences, here are some ways I would help parents share a voice.
  • One way I would help parents have a voice is by encouraging them to have a deep interest for supporting their children. Although not all families will be able to drop their responsibilities to invest in educational resources, guardians should commit to the best of their ability by first learning about ways to support their children. This can be through free programs in the area or by moving to a location that has the necessary resources available.
  • A second way I as a teacher can help parents share their voice is through requesting intervention. From the various studies on childhood education, it is evident that experiences are important at a young age and one of the best ways is by going on trips. For those unable to travel outside a specific region, trips can include accompanying a child to the places in one's area; this includes the library, store, activity center. It will be a teacher's job to make those resources common knowledge and a driving point for school field trips.
  • A third way I can help a parent share their voice is through meetings. As shown in the story, Gina's mother was ambitious towards determining the classroom fit for her daughter. The same can be seen the other way where the teacher can be the one to ask for similar changes.
  • A fourth way that the teachers can help share a voice is by bringing light to important/relevant issues and problems to the classroom. A classroom should be a welcome place for open discussion, and that means that students are capable of cooperating in a similar manner. The person of note will be kept anonymous of course, but it will be important to bring awareness to important topics when necessary. These can also be topics brought up by students in the classroom as well.
