  • Hey, ummm...Thx for coming with me...It's awkward I know. And I know that maybe I should be ready but I just can't have one--
  • -Hey! No need to overexplain! Besides, birth control isn't something to be embarrassed about!
  • Slide: 2
  • It's not?
  • Of course not! There's a lot of stigma, or shame, surrounding reproductive health, and in our case it can also be an intersectional issue.
  • Slide: 3
  • Intersectional? sorry you kind of lost me...
  • Well, Intersectionality means all the different parts of who we are are connected—like our race, gender, and even language. In your case, feeling awkward about the topic of reproductive health can be because of gender and ethnicity.
  • Slide: 4
  • Ah- wait, why do you say that? I always thought that ALL women felt awkward about this kind of stuff?
  • Hmm... Perhaps. But not all issues are as clear cut as you think. They intersect! For example a lot of Hispanic/Latin households expect women to start a family when they're really young! As a result birth control is looked down on, which then makes those who seek reproductive contraception feel ashamed.
  • Slide: 5
  • No, there's stuff we can do! Like educate people about birth control and being supportive to those who seek help in our community. Kind of like what I'm doing here with you today. You never know how much a small non-judgmental talk can help someone in the long run
  • *gasp* So what then? Doesn't this mean that I'm doomed to feeling this way...and so is every Latina woman out there!??
  • Slide: 6
  • Hmm yeah I guess you're right! Thank you!... I'm glad you came along with me! I probably would've second guessed myself this whole time. But now i feel confident that I'm doing the best thing for my health right now.
  • It's no problem! I'm glad I could give you the confidence to do what YOU wanted to do!
