- Percy Jackson, a mischievous teen who always seems to find trouble in school, comes face to face with a mysterious monster who turns out to be his teacher Mrs. Dodds.

- On the way to camp Half-blood, Percy's mom then informs Percy that there are strong forces and creatures headed his way to kill him.
- Eventually, Percy discovers that he is a demi god and his father is Poseidon the god of the sea, who Percy is soon to meet.
- The tro of friends travel far and wide and battle many ferocious monsters. They are set to retrieve the lightning bolt and return it to its owner, Zeus.
- At last they reach the Underworld and confront Hades about the missing master bolt. Hades does not have it but accuses Percy of stealing his own helm of darkness.
- During a fight with Hades Percy discovers the lighting bolt in a bag given to him by Ares the god of war.
- Ares then explains that he wasn't the original thief of the lightning bolt, but that there was a thief before him.
- . .
- Soon, Ares and Percy begin to fight for the things that were stolen. Since Percy still has the master bolt, Ares says he'd have to kill him so that Percy cannot return the lighting bolt to Zeus.
- Unfortunately, Percy failed to kill Ares, but then continues on to return the master bolt to Zeus, the god of the sky.

- Lastly, Percy finally reaches Olympus to return the lighting bolt to Zeus, where he then meets his father Poseidon for the first time.
