Storyboard Text

  • "There was clearly nothing to do but flop down on the shabby little couch and howl. So Della did it."
  • This scene shows her disappointment with herself that she doesn't have enough money to buy James, her partner a good gift. It gives us an insight to their relationship, and how much she cares about his love.
  • This event shows Della's desperation to get Jim a present. It contributes more to the idea of how much she loves him, and believes a present is necessary to keep his love.
  • “I buy hair. Take yer hat off and let’s have a sight at thelooks of it.”
  • (looks at hair) "20 dollars."
  • "Give it to me quick"
  • Will you buy my hair?
  • Subsequently after receiving the money, she starts running around and bursting into several stores in search for a good present. Again, it is proving what extent Della would go to for love. She thinks that she must get him the best gift, period. However, she doesn't seem to realise the true meaning of a gift.
  • "Oh, and the next two hours tripped by on rosy wings. Forget the hashedmetaphor. She was ransacking the stores for Jim’s present."
  • Gift Shop
  •
  • "She found it at last. It surely had been made for Jim and no one else."
  • This part of the story shows when Della believes she has finally found the absolute perfect gift for Jim. After hours of dedicated time spent on searching for this chain, she finally found it.
  • This scene is a very significant part of the story. It conveys the message that is trying to be shown, and its main theme. It proves that money cannot always buy love, and a gift must come from the heart. Della cuts off her hair in order to buy Jim a present, and is praying that Jim still loves her despite her new look. However, little did she know that Jim also made a sacrifice for her... In this picture, Jim shows Della the present he got for her: shampoos, hair products and more.
  • Here, Della shows Jim his present, and is excited for his reaction. When he opens it, he finds the beautiful chain she bought him. Again, the irony comes in when Della finds out that in order to get her a present, Jim had to sell the watch. Della bought the chain to go along with the watch. This all connects back to the main themes again, especially that a gift must come from the heart.
