  • One major theme of "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" by Rod Sterling is that blaming others leads to negative consequences. One example is Les Goodman's car suddenly starts up by itself and everyone blames him for it. Woman One states, "That is right. Looking at the sky as if he were waiting for something"(PG 77). This is important because everyone blaming Les Goodman leads to trust being broken and residents not trusting each other. Next is when Charlie blames Tommy for being the alien when he shot Pete Van Horn. This supports the theme because the residents then start blaming Charlie because he accused Tommy and started. As a result everyone chases Charlie and one person throws a rock at the window cutting him then everyone starts getting violent. The last example is when the residents start to accuse everyone of being the aliens and get violent. "We move into a series of close-ups as people shout, accuse, scream, interspersing with shots and shots of houses as the lights go on and off" (PG 85). We need to know this because it shows that the residents blaming themselves led to them fighting, screaming and attacking each other. In conclusion that is why blaming others leads to negative consequences is the theme of "Monsters Are Due on Maple Street".
