A lot of people are nervous of getting vaccinations against diseases for many different reasons, but mostly from the lack of understanding what happens when the use a vaccine on your body and how it creates immunity. So let's go into more detail.
When the needle is injected in your body, it passes your non-specific defence mechanisms including your skin and chemical barrier. It contains weakened or dead cells of pathogens, this means that the vaccination has no danger to you.
Soon, large cells called B-cells or Lymphocytes identify the antigen that has entered the body by using the antibodies that are on the B-cells that bind to the unique markers that are on the surface of the pathogen.
After the B-cells have latched onto a pathogen, they start to produce antibodies and Memory B-cells which will flow through out the body and learn about this antigen.
Your body learns from expirence which is why vaccinations are very useful, allowing your body to create a artifical immunity against the pathogen. Allowing your body to expirience an infection with out the symptoms of diseases
So when your body gets an infection from the same type of pathogens that you were exposed to in the passed, the Memory B-cells identify the pathogen due to its specific defence mechanism as well as having left over antibodies that patrol your body. So next time you are worried, just take a deep breath as you keep your body healthy.
