  • Why We Need to Support Controlled Burning to Prevent Disastrous Wild Fires
  • By Irene Lee
  • Hey Sam, did you hear that 13 large forest fires burned through more than 45,000 acres this week! That's crazy! How do we prevent these fires from happening?
  • Nick, why don't we learn about fires and see how we can prevent them?
  • Wild fires can be started in many ways, but every fire needs heat like this left out campfire, oxygen, and fuel such as the twigs and vegetation on forests floors.
  • Thats... 144 miles in one day! Then we should try and stop all wild fires from happening to protect them!
  • Uncontrolled wild fires can be harmful to organisms and destroy their habitats along with the air pollution that comes with fires. On average, wild fires spread through forests at a speed of 6 miles per hour.
  • Of course, Sam. We use controlled fires, or prescribed burns, in order to rid the forest floors of possible fuel for when unplanned fires occur. This way, we can prevent even bigger fires from getting out of control and spreading faster, ones that could hurt us and other organisms.
  • Even though uncontrolled wild fires are catastrophic, we need fires to prevent even more destructive fires from happening. No fires would lead to piles of dead leaves and twigs that would become fuel for accidental fires that would be more aggressive and deadly. Joe, can you explain further?
  • Look a bear!
  • Making those prescribed burns also recycles the nutrients from the fire for the habitats to grow healthier and the plants to become more abundant. Just like the forest we are in now.
  • To keep these animals and their habitats safe as well as the environment, it is crucial for us to keep up with controlled fires to prevent ones like those 13 fires. Do you understand a little bit more about them now?
  • Yup! We need controlled fires to protect the animals, environment, and ourselves! So here's part of my allowance to support this so I have a world to conquer when I'm older, muah ha ha ha ha!
