  • UGH! Kansas is a desert! What worthless land!

  • In 1803, President Thomas Jefferson was looking for ways to expand the land. The French had been fighting wars with Great Britain and were desperate for money. The Louisiana territory was bough for $15 Million from the French and that purchase doubled the size of the United States.
  • I want to see if Kansas is really a Desert! Are we nearly there yet?

  • In 1804, Lewis and Clark went on a huge adventure that was 8,000 miles long. They only spent 123 of 8,000 miles in Kansas. The expedition they went on was for the president. Their objective was to travel past the western portion of the country.
  • Jackson's Speech
  • In 1806, Zebulon was the first American to travel the territory by land. He described Kansas as a desert and said the land was worthless. His contributions started a debate---Could this land be cultivated?

  • In 1819, Stephen traveled by steamboat. On a map, he labeled Kansas to become the "Great American Desert". The view of Kansas as a desert stuck and it influenced the US government's settlement policies for years to come.
  • In 1829, Jackson gave a speech on how he wanted eastern farm land for "White American" farmers. He said that many people would be happier without the savages (Native Americans) in their land.
  • In 1830, the Native Americans were forced out of their homes and their land to move to other places like Kansas. They thought that Kansas was useless and no one could farm or surviver there. Many Native Americans found it difficult to live in their new lands.
