  • The Cause The cause of the Persian war was that several Ionian Greek city-states decided to revolt against the Persian Empire. These city-states asked Athens to help and Athens agreed, which made King Darius 1 angry and declare war an Athens.
  • I declare war on the Athens!!!!!

  • Battle of Marathon (491-490 BCE) The Persians sent in their huge army and landed at Marathon, with no fighting experience. The Greek soldiers destroyed with their perfect formation (phalanx). The remaining Persians tried to make their way towards Athens to try to make the city surrender. But luckily for Athens they had a great runner named Phelidippides who ran 26 miles to warn the Athens about the Persians.

  • Battle of Thermopylae (480-479 BCE) Once King Darius dies his son Xerxes spent 10 years training an army to destroy Greece. Spartan King Leonidas led an army of 300 to defend the pass, but when the Persians came they slaughtered him and everyone of his men. The Spartans burned Athens to the ground and were victorious.

  • Battle of Salamis (480 BCE) Themistocles tricked Xerxes into thinking the Athens were retreating, so the Persians left. The Athens pursued them into a small strip of sea to attack. The Persians had much larger ships than the Athens so they couldn't maneuver them as easily and got trapped, so the smaller Athen ships repeatedly crashed into the big Persian ships.

  • Battle of Plataea (479 BCE) Xerxes retreated with his remaining army, but the strong Athens and their allies defeated Xerxes army for the last time (winner Athens). Xerxes returned to Persia defeat and the Persian empire never ever again invaded Greece.

  • Effect Athens and Sparta both claimed victory over Persia. The Spartans were left weak while the Athens were very strong. The Athens created the Delian League, which was an alliance with other city-states to protect themselves if Persia was to ever invade again.
