Thomas Jefferson Wanted to make the US larger. So he bought the Louisiana territory for about $370 million in 1803. The US doubled in size. They started to become a serious country.

Lewis and Clark traveled an estimated $123 miles in Kansas. They called Kansas beautiful. Some people called it a desert but that's because they traveled to the wrong part of Kansas. To go to the good parts of Kansas you have to travel very far.
Jackson's Speech
When Zebulon went to western Kansas he said it was terrible. He called it "uninhabitable". He hated it.

Stephen H. Long had also been discovering western Kansas as Zebulon Pike. Stephen called Kansas "The Great American Desert".
President Jackson said no person should travel to the Great America Desert. He said the US should relocate their "savages" and use their land for the growth of the United States.
The Indian Removal Act forced east naitve American tribes off their own land. They had to relocate to Kansas and Oklahoma.
