Storyboard Text

  • Earthquakes are natural hazards that are responsible for considerable loss of life and damage to property .
  • They occur when seismic waves caused by energy stored in Earth's crust.This energy is usually released when masses of rock straining against one another fracture and slip. The energy released from tan earthquake is called the magnitude.
  • Our house was the surface directly above the focus of the earthquake otherwise known as the epicenter which ended up destroying all our belongings.
  • There are about 1 million earthquakes every year that can be felt by people worlwide, with a variation in the intensity of shaking, which is referred to as ground motion.
  • The Hypocenter or focus of the Earthquake is the area along a fault plane when the seismic motion is starting.
  • There is also the moment magnitude scale which measures the energy released in the disaster. Anything above a 7 is considered a major earthquake and should result in a lot of damages.
  • The Earthquake that ended displacing Half of our city was a 8.7 on the richter scale which is based on the amplitude of the seismic waves.
