Storyboard Text

  • Long ago, in the very olden time, there lived a powerful yet barbaric king. One of the king's ideas was a public arena as an agent of poetic justice. Crime was punished, or innocence was decided, by the result of chance.
  • In the arena there were two doors. If the accused man opened one, a tiger leaped out and tore him to pieces. If he opened the other door, a beautiful woman stepped out, to whom he was immediately married.
  • The king had a beautiful daughter who was like him in many ways. He loved her more than anything. But the princess was secretly in love with a young man who was the bravest and best in the land, but he was only a commoner, from no important family.
  • One day the king found out about this, and ordered the young man to be put on trial. The princess knew which door concealed the tiger, and which the lady. She even knew which lady was behind the door, and she hated her. The girl was lovely but she had dared to raise her eyes to the loved one of the princess.
  • Every day and in her dreams, she saw first her lover being devoured by the lion, and then his look of delight as he opened the door and saw the lovely lady standing in front of him. Finally, she made her choice.
  • Her decision was indicated in a second, but was made after days and nights of anguished deliberation. She knew she would be asked, and knew what she would answer, and, without the slightest hesitation, she moved her hand to the right.
