Simon Bolivar is born in 1783, to a wealthy family in Venezuela. He got married in Europe, but his wife died from yellow fever.
Bolivar faces the largest army sent from Spain
He studied in Europe for several years. He was considered a creole because he was native, meaning he wasn't allowed to attain the highest offices in society.
Bolivar wins independence for Venezuela and Ecuador
A group of rebels in Venezuela removed the Spanish governor from office and took control of the colony. After Venezuela wins its independence from Spain, the Spanish fought back and Bolivar led an army that was forced to leave the country.
Bolivar declares himself military dictator and later retires
Neither Bolivar or Spain won any decisive battles. Bolivar won more support though, when he declared the end of slavery to be one his goals. He then began to build the the foundations for a future victory.
Bolivar freed Peru from Spain in 1825, now called Bolivia. He was president of Gran Columbia, Peru, and Bolivia. He hoped these nations would unite and become stronger. However, not everyone believed in his vision. Some of his closest allies believed there should've been several countries, instead of one large one.
Bolivar's opponents attacked his palace and tried to assassinate him after the civil war broke out. He retired in 1830, after he got tuberculosis and heart sick over the conflict. He passed away later that year.
