Wudhu is an obligatory ritual cleansing that every Muslim must perform before prayer. Amir will now show you the steps.
After Suhoor, we make Wudhu to prepare for Fajr!
Explaining Wudhu!
During a typical day of Ramadan, a devote Sunni Muslim participates in Suhoor, Wudhu, the five prayers, a dua upon breaking the fast, and Taraweeh prayers!
As-Salamu Alaikum! My name is Amina, and this is my brother, Amir. Today, we will explain five components of a typical Ramadan day from a Sunni perspective.
Fajr is the prayer at dawn, which starts the fast during Ramadan. Before Fajr, we eat a small meal called Suhoor. This meal is a sunnah practice from prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), meaning it is derived from his teachings and actions.
A fast is not valid if a person does not have the intention beforehand, meaning they cannot decide to fast after Fajr. Therefore, Suhoor is also very important because it allows a person make the intention to fast.
Explaining Suhoor!
Then, we wipe our head with wet hands once, from the tip of the forehead to the back of the head. With the same water on our hands, we wipe our ears once, using our index to wipe the inside and our thumbs to wipe the back of the ears.
First, we wash our hands three times, starting with the right hand, making sure that the water touches from fingertips to the wrists. Then, we rinse our mouth three times, bring water into our nose three times, and wash our face three times. After, we wash our arms three times, beginning with the right, from the fingertips to the elbow.
Lastly, we rinse our feet three times with new water, starting with the right, up to the ankles. Water must touch every part, including between the toes. After Wudhu, the shahadah is said, meaning the creed.
Explaining Wudhu!
Explaining Prayer!
Women can lead other women in prayer, but due to the nature of the prayer and Allah's assignment of roles, women cannot lead men.
To start the prayer, we say, "Allahu Akbar," meaning, "God is great."
Now that we have both completed Wudhu and the adhan (call) for Fajr has sounded, we will pray. I will be leading Amina in prayer, as that is my responsibility in a congregational prayer.
Explaining Prayer!
After praying Fajr, it is sunnah to read the morning adhkar, or remembrances, which include surah Ikhlaas, Falaq, and Naas from the Quran.
There are four more prayers, those being Dhuhr (at noon), Asr (at afternoon), Maghrib (at sunset), and Isha (at night).
