- The Hebrews (Jews) settled in Canaan, which lay between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea. Hebrews often used the word Canaan to refer to all Palestine.

- In Torah (The sacred writing) the father of the Hebrews Abraham was told by God Yahweh to move with his family and herds from Mesopotamia to Canaan to Egypt and back.
