Ulysses Grant was marching over to the Mississippi with a plan. He knew that if he got the Mississippi River then they would be much more powerful and shipping supplies and goods would help win this war.
If we take the town of Vicksburg, then we can also get the mississippi river which would be great for shipping supplies and goods towards the north.
Ulysses Grant had a plan at vicksburg to not do a battle but do a siege. He surrounded the town using the mississippi river while bombarding them with artillery. He gave them very little to eat or drink until they surrendered.
Give them only a cup of peas and a cup of water until they starve or surrender.
With the win at Vicksburg, the union got access to the Mississippi River which allowed them to ship goods and supplies which were a big impact in the war. The river runs north and south which got food for soldiers to battle grounds or more ammunition if they needed it.
This a great win for the north. We can ship supplies from the north and the south.
