- Lucía and her brother's journey to make the decision to flee Cuba with thousands of other Cubans on their own.
- The Cuban Revolution was an armed revolt conducted by Fidel Castro and his revolutionaries in the July Movement with allies against the dictatorship of Cuban president. Later in 1962, the Cuban Missile Crisis with the aid of the Soviet Union.

- Lucia Álvarezwasan typical teenage girl who dressed in the latest fashions and loved shopping with her best friend Ivette. When Cuban soldiers visit their small town, many people, including the people that Lucia knows, are executed for speaking out against Fidel Castro.
- Lucía’s parents made the heart wrenching decision to send her and her little brother to the United States, on their own. She knew hereparents are right not to trust because they had hidden news and money and hid the revolution to her and her brother.
- They were flown to Miami where they were going to be sent off to Grand Island Nebraska to live with the Baxter's. The kids must then learn how to speak English and how to learn about the United States. However, it is going to hard to get used to for both of them.
- Overtime, Lucia and Frankie now starts to learn somewhat of English, and now have adapt the Baxter family, However she did miss Cuba, Friends, and especiallyher Mom and Dad. That's when a week later she a got a letter from her parents saying that the Revolution was hail and was telling her that she was coming to America.
- After almost two years of not seeing each other Lucia and Frankie finally get to see their mother, Lucia had appreciated her parent because they were just trying to protect them from harms of the world.
