  • I want wealth, give me all of the things that you have
  • Countries such as the Netherlands and Britain fought to imperialize Africa. This was because of the rich natural resources present in Africa such as diamonds and gold that can bring great wealth to whoever that controls it. Although many African tribes rebelled and fought back, their outdated weapons were no match for Europeans guns, and few succeeded like the Ethiopians did.

  • India was considered the "jewel in the crown" for Britain. It was considered the most valuable in Britain's colonies because India provided raw materials for Britain's factories and production. The Indian people did try to fight back with examples like the Sepoy Mutiny but were unsuccessful because the religious tension between Hindus and Muslims caused a weak unity among the Indian people.

  • Countries like France and Britain wanted Egypt for its strategic location on the Red Sea. In order to try to prevent imperialism, the rulers of Egypt tried to modernize Egypt by actions such as modernizing its military, planting cash crops to enter the global market, and the creation of Suez Canal. Unfortunately, Egypt was unable to pay back their heavy loans on the creation of this canal, which gave the British the ability to control the canal, which eventually allowed them to occupy Egypt.

  • The US established significant influence over Cuba through the Platinum of 1901. this amendment allowed the US to intervene in Cuban Affairs and establish a permanent American Naval Base at Guatemala bay. the US also had significant economic interests in Cuba with American companies controlling large portions of Cuban land and resources.

  • US imperialism in Alaska began with the purchase of the territory from Russia in 1867 the transaction known as the Alaska Purchase was negotiated by the US Secretary of State William H Seward for $7.2 million which amounted to about 2 cents per acre at the time this purchase was ridiculed by some Americans as “Seward's Folly” or “Seward icebox” because they sell little value in the remote and icy land.
