Storyboard Text

  • In the late 17th century wars began between Britain, France and Spain. these wars occurred between 1689 to 1763. the stakes were, because the winner between the two could claim supremacy in the west indies and Canada and to gain control over the lucrative colonial trade.
  • The British believed that the french provoked the war by building a chain of forts in the Ohio river valley. The french did so to stop the westward growth of the British colonies. The British responded through the governor of Virginia. He sent a small military under the command of George Washington. They gained a small victory but surrendered to the french army.
  • The British recognized the need for coordinating their colonial defense. they called for several representatives from severaldifferentcolonies to meet in a congress at Albany, New York, in 1754. They adopted a plan, called The Albany Plan of Union, developed by Benjamin Franklin. This plan provided a intercolonial government and a system for recruiting troops and collecting taxes from several different colonies.
  • In 1755, general Braddock led a force of 1500 British natives and Virginia militiaman. He was intending on removing the french from Fort Dequesene. As he came near, the french gathered 300 of their troops and 600Indianantroops. As the fench and indian attacked from the woods, the british(GeorgeWashington) said that he has never seen so many troops act incowardlinessand fear. theBritishloss and so did General Braddock.
  • The majority of native Americans leaned towards the french simply because they lived side by side as fur trappers and traders. But, several Native American colonies stayed neutral, and did not pick a side.
  • The new British prime minster William Pitt concentrated the governments military strategy on conquering Canada. this strategy was successful as the British retook Louisbourg in 1758, they surrendered Quebec in 1759 and they took Montreal in 1760. With these victories the British signed a peace treaty in 1763 and exteaned their territories in north America.
