- Christopher Columbus proposed to the king of Portugal a new route to reach Asia by traveling west. The project was rejected because Portugal was committed to the southern route.
- Christopher Columbus presented his project to the Catholic Monarchs who decided to finance it.
- The expedition, made up of three ships, left the port of Palos de la Frontera, in Huelva, on August 3, 1492.
- First he went to the Canary Islands to collect food, from where he set sail a month later.
