In 1832, the Bank’s charter (its legal existence) was up for renewal. The Bank’s supporters, including Senator Henry Clay, wanted to renew it, hoping it would help Clay’s political career. Jackson, however, vetoed the renewal, saying the Bank was harmful to the country. This led to a fierce political battle.
