  • L'Ouverture was born and raised on a plantation. From an early age he was taught to read and write. This made him somewhat free. He was one of the major leaders in the revolution and he is sometimes called the black George Washington.
  • Not all the plantation masters were as kind as L'Ouvetures and sadly the majority of them were quite brutal toward the slaves. This cruel behavior led the slaves to revolt.
  • The slaves burned down multiple plantations and brutally murdered their masters.
  • Shocked by what was happening L'ouverture first went to help his previous master escape then started aiding the revolution. He trained the slaves so that they would be able to fight the French.
  • France knew that they could not with a war against the Spanish, British and also fight with the slaves so they freed all slaves and made them French Citizens. L'Ouverture then decided to side with France and helped them fight.
  • Napoleon became the leader of France and reinforced slavery in St Domingue. He then got L'Ouverture arrested.
  • L'Ouverture died in a cold jail cell in the mountains. However, the revolution did not die with him.
