Storyboard Text

  • Firefighters are able to extinguish the smaller fires, but the reactor core burns for days after the explosion. Helicopters dump sand and chemicals into the core in the attempt of slowing the radiation spread.
  • Why does it taste like metal?
  • Firefighters at the scene were unaware of the radiation and its dangers, so they wore no protective gear. By the time helicopters began dropping chemicals, there was already the amount of radiation of forty atomic bombs.
  • Don't worry about it
  • Meanwhile, workers are still inside, and those who have escaped are already experiencing symptoms of radiation poisoning. Firefighters and the nuclear plant workers are quickly developing blisters and vomiting. Hospitals are being filled up. Still, citizens are unaware of what exactly is going on. People are assured that the situation is "under control." When people of Pripyat were finally evacuated, they had already been in contact with enough radiation to develop cancer. Many people suffered from the government's ignorance.
  • Everything is under control
  • Now, the city of Pripyat is completely unlivable and vacant. To even walk in the vicinity of Chernobyl, you have to wear protective gear and carry a radiation detector. It has been over thirty years and radiation still lingers from the explosion.
  • 1. The Chernobyl power plant located in present-day Ukraine experienced a power surge due to complications when a test was being run. It was supervised by Aleksandr Akimov.
  • 4. Additional, smaller explosions occur, and deadly radiation is omitted into the air. The building is set on radioactive fire.
  • Chernobyl made large areas of agricultural land unusable, and timber production was stopped in surrounding forests due to the radiation. Because the Soviets hid important information regarding the danger of the radiation, Russia was viewed poorly by other countries. They tried to cover up what happened and the mistakes that were made. The city Pripyat is now uninhabitable. The incident at Chernobyl now serves as a warning for other countries with nuclear power plants. Aleksandr Akimov, the supervisor, was held accountable for not following protocol.
  • 5. The firefighters and citizens of the surrounding cities are unaware that they are at risk to radiation poisoning.
  • SummaryApril 25-26 1986
  • 2. There is a problem with the power in the reactor, and guidelines of the plant are ignored when the test is cleared to run.
  • 6. Eventually, surrounding towns were evacuated, but the operators of Chernobyl and many others die from the high exposure to radiation.
  • 3. The test caused a power surge, and the unstable reactor explodes. This is the first explosion which blows the roof off of the building.
