  • Freudian Defense Mechanisms
  • Today I will be talking about five different Defense Mechanisms by Sigmund Freud!
  • Regression
  • Reaction Formula
  •
  • By Ellena Yang
  • Rationalization
  • MATH TEST 55%X 1. CX 2. AX 3. D 4. B 5. 106. 30.9X 7. 9.658. 449. 1/210. 90, 99X 11. 108.88
  • My teacher is a bad teacher. She barely taught anything and when she did, it never made sense. This test grade wasn't all my fault, as I'm smart and capable in math.
  • Regression was proposed by Anna Freud. She believed that when some experiences regression, their ego reverts back to an earlier stage of development, especially in stressful cases. The person normally regresses to a psychosexual stage of development that they are fixated on. For example, an adult reverts to extreme crying when having to go to the doctors

  • Reaction Formula, according to Sigmund Freud, is when someone exhibits an exaggerated emotion, attitude, or behavior in reaction to feeling the complete opposite of said emotion in an effort to hide their true feelings and reduce anxiety as the id is satisfied while the ego is ignorant of any true motives. For example, a student may want to blow up at their "friend" but instead exhibits extreme friendliness.
  • Denial
  • He is not dead! He was just here yesterday! I saw him! He is still at work! You're lying again! Stop lying!
  • Rationalization is when a person explains a certain, unacceptable, behavior through excuses, thus remaining ignorant of the real reason why things happened or their behavior. A person may blame an outside source while affirming their own skills, protecting their self-esteem and egos. For example, a student may blame their teacher for their bad test grade instead of their own actions of not studying.
  • Displacement is when someone takes out their frustration, feelings, or impulses on others or objects that are more acceptable, being far less threatening that will not lead to negative consequences. For example, someone might take out their anger and frustrations on their children or pets after being scolded by their boss.
  • Denial is when a person outright refuses to accept a certain, horrible, reality or admit a truth, thus blocking out all external awareness and denying that it even exists. This protects the ego from things that the person cannot cope with but requires much energy. For example, a person may deny the death of a loved one has occurred.
