- Frederick Douglass (center, yellow shirt) is working in the field with a few other boys while being watched by Mr. Covey (blue shirt) , who will whip them if they even pause or take a break.
- Fight with Covey
- You must go back, but before you go I will give you a root, it will help you, if you have it with you you will never get beaten.
- Frederick Douglass is sick, Covey comes after him, and Douglass runs.
- Fight with Covey
- No, I shall not obey, I am done, I hate this, and now I will never, ever again be beaten and used like an animal.
