Britain incurred 715,000 military deaths (with more than twice that number wounded), the destruction of 3.6% of its human capital, 10% of its domestic and 24% of its overseas assets. This impact on the British empire led Lloyd George to suggest punishments that wouldn't ruin the trade between Germany and Britain, as Germany was one of their main traders. After the treaty or Versailles was signed, he admitted that he believed it was too harsh and said We shall have to fight another war in 25 years time.
