  • The Middle Passage, the voyage across the Atlantic, was brutal and deadly for enslaved Africans. Crammed into overcrowded ships, they faced disease, malnutrition, and abuse. Many died from harsh conditions, while others resisted through revolts or suicide. The journey could last weeks or months, leaving lasting trauma on survivors.
  • Upon arrival in the Americas, enslaved Africans were taken to markets or auctioned to the highest bidder. Families were often separated, and individuals were inspected like property. Many were forced to work on plantations, picking cotton, sugar, and other crops under brutal conditions. They faced an unfamiliar land, harsh treatment, and a lifetime of oppression. Many resisted in various ways, but their freedom remained out of reach for generations.
