On June 3rd, 1789, British Explorer and fur trader Alexander Mackenzie set out to search for the Pacific Ocean. Mackenzie wanted to test Peter Pond's theory, Pond stated that the largest river in Canada (Mackenzie River) eventually led into the Pacific Ocean. Mackenzie was also to discover and open up new trade routes for his company. Mackenzie explored for the North West Company, a major force in the fur trade.

Mackenzie and his crew faced many challenges and setbacks on his first voyage to the Pacific Ocean. They encountered difficult conditions, including rugged terrain and bad weather. They also dealt with insects such as mosquitos and gnats, that carried a number of diseases. But the biggest problem was that Mackenzie didn't even reach the Pacific Ocean! The river actually flowed into the Arctic Ocean! Geography was also a major issue in exploration.

Mackenzie had a quite positive and peaceful relationship with the First Nations people he encountered. On his first voyage, Mackenzie travelled with a small group of guides, which included Chipewyan chief Awgeenah, who also went by the name English Chief. English Chief guided and led Mackenzie's party. Mackenzie was stationed at Fort Chipewyan, an important trading post established by the North West Company. Fort Chipewyan was located on the southern shore of Lake Athabasca.
